True Blood - HBO Vampire Series

The website for True Blood, the HBO series based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, can be found here. There is a link to a short video showing brief glimpses of various scenes with narration by producer Alan Ball. If your in the mood for a vampire beverage you can find out about Tru Blood, the Japanese invented blood substitute that has allowed vampires to go public. Best of all is the blog, Blood Copy, described thusly: "This website chronicles the amazing days we live in as vampires attempt to integrate with humans. With the advent of Tru Blood, a synthetic blood substitute, vampires have decided to announce their presence and exist among us openly. This website chronicles the amazing days we live in as vampires attempt to integrate with humans.... read more. Watch the video of how vampires announced themselves to the world. Someone had lots of fun making this spoof of how major events are covered by the media.

Ms Harris who created the world admits,"It won't be my creation any more when it's on television. It'll be Alan's creation, and a completely different animal. I'm looking forward to seeing the books from a completely different point of view." See the Complete interview on Patricia's Vampire Notes.

The first episode is supposed to be inspired by Dead Until Dark book one in the series.

As readers of this blog are aware I am a devoted follower of the written series. Like other fans I have in mind what the characters are like. My hope is that Alan Ball's outlook is similar to mine.

This reminds me that last Sunday (6/29) I saw a rerun of Blood Ties, the TV series base on Tanya Huff's Vicki Nelson stories. In my opinion the producers did a great job with this series. The three main characters - Vicki, Henry (vampire son of Henry VIII), and Mike (cop and ex-lover of Vicki - were written and acted very true to the books. Of course the show wasn't renewed! Whether Lifetime will continue to air older episodes, I'm not certain. I checked their upcoming Sunday schedule (7/5/08). Army Wives was listed but not Blood Ties; however, at least for now, Lifetime shows full episodes online.

I'm quite excited/nervous about the new series. I think it could be done well, or it could be really so so. I really like Alan and think he's great so I have big hopes. Maybe too high?

As for Blood Ties, I was really upset it was cancelled. It was on at a strange time, so I think that might have hindered viewing. I was really looking forward to how their relationship(s) was going to progress. :(

I'm hopeful that book fans will be pleased with the series, as well. I've seen a pre-air version of the pilot and am quite enthused to see more (enthused enough I've built a fan site for the show, too: http://true-blood.tv ) but had not read the books previously. In fact, I just tracked down the first book after seeing the pilot and am now only 15 pages into it. :-)

Let's keep our fingers crossed that HBO knows what it's doing.

If you want to know how the characters in Blood Ties develop read the 5 books by Tanya Huff. In the novels there is definitely a beginning and an end. Read in order of publication: Blood Price; Blood Trail; Blood Lines; Blood Pact; Blood Debt

Hi John

I have been a fan of the print series since book 1. I am looking forward to the series although I know that changes will be made for TV.

I'll take a look at you web site.

Thanks for commenting!

True Blood resembles Heroes at first glance (just rented the first episode from Blockbuster), though it still feels mostly original... for some reason this show makes me want to eat Cajun food and drink cheap beer
