Happy Halloween from the Vampires in Manhattan

Going to the Arnhem Society is always a scream, this time of the year more than most.  I climbed the stairs and rang the bell of the stately building in Manhattan.

Vampire David Hilliard opened the door.  “I could feel you on the other side.  I’m so glad you’re able to attend our celebration.”  He took my coat and led me down hallway after hall.

Stopping at the golden double doors, he pulled them open and we entered a huge ballroom filled with tables, chairs, and busy vampires.

“What’s everyone doing?”  I asked, going over to a table where Laura, David’s wife sat.  The pumpkin she worked on had the cut out of a rabbit.

“Is that supposed to be scary?” I laughed.

“Actually it’s very scary.  One should not underestimate the power of a shapeshifter rabbit like in Vampire in the Basement,” David added.

I couldn’t help but notice his amused grin, as I examined the other pumpkins on the table.  Each one receiving its own electric tea light.  There was one with a fierce bear face.

“For my friend Gregor, the shapeshifter, in When Love Survives,” said David.

One pumpkin really stopped me.  It had a fierce, ugly face with fangs that took up most of the pumpkin—more like tusks.
That’s a Kere, an ancestor of the vampire, and what Laura and I had to face in The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais.

“That would scare me.”

“Think of facing down an army of them,” he said.

I came to another pumpkin carved like a demon face.  “What is that?”

Vampire Trevor Stenwood laughed.  “It’s easy to laugh about it now, but that one of the demons that tried to kill Georgia in our ebook A Vampire for Christmas.”  He looks around.  “Excuse me.  It seems I’ve misplaced her.”  He left the hall.

The ceiling was painted like a night sky, but puffy white clouds hung beneath it.  The painted gold star seemed to move.

Laura grabbed me by the arm.  “Come.  We should get dressed for the party.”  I followed Laura out of the hall, while the rest of the vampires continued to decorate.
