I have to agree with Lisa who mentioned Morgan le Fey. Although Morgaine is usually depicted as a villain, I have not been able to think of her in that way since reading The Mists of Avalon
by Marion Zimmer Bradley. She tells the Arthurian legend from the point of view of the women. Morgan served the Goddess, and she was Arthur's older sister. See the entry in Wikipedia
