Witch Heart - Review

Witch Heart (Elemental Witches Book 3)
Anya Bast
Berkley (Sensation), January 2009

From the publisher: With the immense powers of an earth witch, Claire isn't destined to be a demon's handmaiden. Yet this has been her fate since she was six, when her warlock mother brought her to Eudae. Now as an adult, she's about to discover her true power—and how far others are willing to go to take it away...

As part of a mission with the Coven, Adam Tyrell rescues Claire from her enslavement—and finds himself immediately taken with the beautiful witch. But this charming playboy soon learns that it's easier to steal Claire from demons than win her heart, for her life as a servant has ravaged her spirit. But with Adam determined to protect her from the warlocks who want to harness her magick for evil, Claire's resistance starts to give way—and they find themselves in the heat of danger, surrendering to the lure of their deepest desires...

From PVN: This is how the story begins: "Twenty-three years as the Handmaiden of a daaeman had prepared Claire for many things, but not this. Nothing could have prepared her for this.

"She huddled back against a brick wall, the cold seeping through her thin dress, and watched the inky shadows grow on the building opposite her. Discarded paper disturbed by the wind rustled/over the pavement and a sudden bloom of voices and laughter came from the mouth of the alley and gradually faded away.

"Still the shadows grew..."

Right from the start the fear is palpable. Claire is on the run for her life. Her pursuers, the Atrika, most malevelant of all daaemon, want the powerful magic she carries and will stop at nothing until they have it. The coven of Elemental witches stand ready to help Claire, but their combined magic has little effect against the Atrika.

One of the witches is the handsome, playboy Adam. He and Claire have a strong attraction for one another which they at first try to ignore.  Although they usually find the time and inclination for ardent love making they must always be mindful of the relentless Atrika.

Anya Bast has created a vivid combination of sizzling, sexual passion and pulse pounding adventure!

This is Book 3 in the Elemental Witch series, and the only one I have read so far. I enjoyed the story tremendously, but would probably have had a better understanding of the complex world Bast created if I had read Books 1 and 2 first. That problem will soon be remedied. A dear friend is sending me copies. Then I'll be ready for Book 4.

I've read them all but Witch Fury, which I have had for a while now (author signed) but I'm reluctant to read because it's the last in the series! She's starting a new series and I'm excited about that. :)

Jessica, I know exactly how you feel. I hate for a favorite series (or book) to end. Some things need to be savored.
