Angelology - Book Review

Angelology
by Danielle Trussoni
Viking, March 2010

A young nun named Evangeline stumbles across a letter written to the mother superior of St Rose convent in 1944. it concerns a dangerous and mysterious expedition financed by Mrs. Abigail Rockefeller

Meanwhile Percival Grigori has asked the young scholar Verlaine to find out about the same Mrs Rockefeller and any connection she may have had St Rose Convent in NY.

Percival is one of the Nephilim, descendants of the Watchers, fallen angels who defied God and took human wives. While the Watchers were cast into a pit of darkness their offspring, throughout the centuries, walked the earth waging a war against humanity by instigating conflicts and taking control of earthly affairs through breeding with the most influential families.

One secret group of humans, the Angelologists, actively fight these creatures who, at their purist, have a physical beauty that echoes their angel ancestry.  Their vicious nature belies that beauty. It should come as no surprise that the Nephilim were instrumental in the rise of Nazism. Yet it was during the second world war that the expedition payed for by Mrs Rockerfeller led to the finding of an instrument that could end the struggle against this evil.

When Trussoni concentrates her attention on the angelologists and the mysteries they have uncovered about the fallen as well as the dangers they must face to unearth these findings, she is at her best. Her richly imagined history of the Watchers and Nephilim is riveting. Although readers of Urban Fantasy will not be strangers to the concept of fallen angels and their progeny, I cannot think of another novel that goes into the depth of their history and its consequences.

The ending of of Angelology leaves no doubt there will be a sequel. My hope is that the author will revisit the Watchers who were last seen pleading for their freedom.

I have some quibbles about certain scenarios, but they are minor and I enjoyed this book tremendously. I stayed up late many nights, fighting sleep because I had to know what happened next.

Dracula's Guest: And Other Victorian Vampire Stories - Book Review

Dracula's Guest: And Other Victorian Vampire Stories. Edited by Michael Sims. Walker & Company (June 22, 2010)

Michael Sims, the editor of this excellent collection, gathers stories of the undead from throughout Europe and written in what he loosely terms the Victorian era. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 - 1901, but the range of these published tales is a bit wide of that mark.

Sims' entertaining introduction tells of themes and images that occur within this collection. These blood suckers were predators who could be turned away by Christian symbols, garlic, and little else. Do not expect sparkling  vampires or romantic heroes agonizing over their soulless state. As for Ann Rice's haughty Lestat, he wouldn't be caught dead with these creatures.

"In this book you will find memorably chilling moments such as these: a literal race  against death in which a man on horseback tries to escape from a terrifying child vampire and the rest of its family; a teenage girl's horrified realization of the nature of her adoring new friend; and a man who abandons his wife because he has brought her sister's corpse back to some semblance of life. If you think of the Victorians as waistcoated prudes with BBC accents, you're in for a shock."

For our ancestors living in earlier centuries there would be found a plenitude of corpses. Many graveyards gave up their dead because of overpopulation, too many bodies in a single grave, and a high water table. Bodies in all states of decay surfaced. No wonder the living were obsessed with the dead.

For high atmosphere nothing compares to writers of the nineteenth century. The anthology is arranged to show how vampire tales and myths evolved. The last story is Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker and the first is They Opened the Graves.

The story selection has three divisions: The Roots; The Tree; The Fruit. Each story is prefaced by a brief literary biography of the author.

THE ROOTS

They Opened the Graves by Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens (1703-1771)
Dead Persons in Hungary by Antoine Augustin Calmet (1672-1757)
The End of My Journey by George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824)
The Vampyre by John Polidori (1795-1821)
Wake Not the Dead attributed to Johann Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853)
The Deathly Lover by Theophile Gautier (1811-1872)

THE TREE

The Family of the Vourdalak by Alexksei Tolstoy (1817-1875)
Varney the Vampyre by James Malcolm Rymer (1814-1884)
What Was It? by Fitz-James O'Brien (1826?-1862)
The Mysterious Stranger by Anonymous
A Mystery of the Campagna by Anne Crawford (1846 -?)
Death and Burial - Vampires and Were-Wolves by Emily Gerard (1849-1905)
Let Loose by Mary Cholmondeley (1859-1925)
A True Story of a Vampire by Eric, Count Stenbock (1860-1895)
Good Lady Ducayne by Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915)
And the Creature Came In by Augustus Hare (1834-1903)
The Tomb of Sarah by F. G Loring (1869-1951)
The Vampire Maid by Hume Nisbet (1849-1923)

THE FRUIT

Luella Miller by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930)
Count Magnus by M. R. James (1862-1936)
Alymer Vance and the Vampire by Alice and Claude Askew (Jane de Courcy,
         1874-1917, and Arthur Cary, 1866-1917)
Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker (1847-1912)

Author Michele Hauf - Guest Blog and Contest

Please welcome Michele Hauf, prolific author of vampire and paranormal romances and the editor of VampChix. She gives us the inside scoop on Creed, the luscious hero of her new novel. Michele will be around today, Monday March 29, to converse with readers. Ask her a question today and get an extra chance in Michele's contest. See details at end of post.   This contest has ended.

Writing the Hero

Thanks to Patricia for having me at her blog today!  HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND is in bookstores now, and the related novella, 'Vampire's Tango' is available at your favorite online electronic book retailer.

I thought I'd chat a bit about the hero of Her Vamp today.  Creed was in my brain a long time before I started the story.  I knew he was handsome (of course), sexy (naturally), probably almost a thousand years old, and French.  But I can't really start writing a story until I can put an image of the hero in my brain, or rather, on my desktop.

So I scanned through my file of faces (actors, models, pictures I've ripped out from magazines) for the perfect fit for Creed, and came up with this guy.  Perfect.  He's got this great seasoned look about him that says 'I've been around a bit, but I'm still gonna rock your world if you take a chance on me'.

Always with the hero it's a challenge to figure them out.  What kind of life has he led to shape him into the man he is today?  Creed is an elder vampire, which means he was around before the Protection spell was put on witch's blood to make it poisonous to vampires.  That happened around the year 1200.  So yeah, the dude is old.  But he's seen history, lived it, and currently is the leader of the vampire tribe Nava.

He may seem set in his ways, but he is hungry to learn and experience.  And he is impeccable with his word.  When this guy vows to protect the heroine, he means it.  It harks back to his serving in medieval wars against the werewolves.  I love a man with a big sword, so I gave him one: Wolfsbane.  Yep, guys name their swords.  Wolfsbane has cut down hundreds of werewolves over the centuries, but in this story Creed is faced with the challenge of seeing beyond age-old prejudices.  He'll need a strong heroine to help him change, and I gave him one in Blu Masterson.

New Vampire releases for March 2010

There are some excellent vampire titles out this month, several by popular authors like - Angela Knight, Mario Acevedo, Christopher Moore, and Kerrelyn Sparks, just to name a few.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
by Seth Grahame-Smith
Grand Central Publishing; First Edition edition (March 2, 2010)

From the Publisher: Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother's bedside. She's been stricken with something the old-timers call "Milk Sickness."

"My baby boy..." she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, "henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose..." Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

Good thing theirs is an undying love, since their Goth Girl Friday, Abby Normal, imprisoned them in a bronze statue.
