Legacy of the Dark Kind: Blood Lament (Book 2)

Four O'Clock Press (January 20, 2009)

From the publisher: The re-animated corpse of a suicidal, junkie, male whore vampire - Jazriel's description of himself.... Others have more colourful and explicit opinions about him! He is also beautiful, charming and recklessly courageous. With the Dark Kind's future hanging in the balance, their only hope of survival is the unlikely pairing of this dissolute wreck of a blood-drinker and Gabrielle Devane, a feisty, vampire-hating human. Blood Lament continues the story of the Dark Kind; eternally youthful, amoral beings of the night, who have preyed on man since the dawn of recorded history but who now, in turn, are in danger of being preyed upon by their enemies.

But what's a zombie chick to do when her 'Mommie Dearest' gets sick? If you're Amanda Feral, you can either ignore the wicked old witch - or bury the past by visiting Ethel before she kicks it. Amanda's not thrilled about the idea of crossing three states just to be criticized. But Wendy, who's always looking for fresh meat, is up for the adventure. And Gil, who just launched his 'luxury' resurrection business, needs to disappear because a pissed-off client is out for his blood. First, they pack their stiletto pumps and plasma into a skeevy rattrap on wheels that used to be a Winnebago. Then, with a little help from a Korean-ghost hood ornament, a masochist named Fishhook, and a slew of 'moderately accurate' psychics, they hit the highway - their way. Of course, they'll have to navigate past some neo-Nazi skinheads, a horny dust devil, a hunky werewolf cop (who could pass for an underwear model) and an unsightly horde of supermarket shoppers. Wolferain and The Vampires of Congo
by Mick Van Wes
Publisher: Lulu.com, 2009

Description: August 1835... Wolferain awoke atop a tree house he had built ages ago. He stood, overseeing the rainforest he protected and called home. Something was different today. He understood his five senses. Today another sense seemed to be crawling out from centuries long ago. Something was not right in the jungle. He could not have known that Daemon Drago, a seven hundred year old vampire, had found a new place to live nor that Daemon was a kind of foe that he had never faced before, more powerful, possessing centuries of knowledge and filled with an unquenchable thirst. Nor, as Wolferain began racing through the treetops, could he suspect the effect a vampire bite would have upon his friends, the gorillas of Congo.

Bone Crossed - Book Review

Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4) by Patricia Briggs. Ace (February 3, 2009)

In Mercy Thompson's world her mate Adam is an Alpha werewolf, her roommate Samuel, also a werewolf, is a dear friend she keeps close hoping to heal his wounded spirit, one of her closest friends, Stefan, is a vampire, and she is a welcomed by many of the fae. Mercy, herself is a shifter who can change immediately from human to coyote form. Beginning with Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, Book 1) author Briggs has created adventure and mystery in an urban fantasy setting.

Mercy makes her living as a auto mechanic, and in fact owns her own business. As we first meet her in Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4) she still hurts psychically from the rape by a man she subsequently killed. Adding to her problems is the burning enmity of Marsilia, vampire mistress of the Tri-Cities in Washington state. Mercy caused the death of Andre, a close ally of Marsilia. Stephan hid this fact from Marsilia and will suffer for it. In the midst of a conversation with Adam a charred, bloody body appears in the room. Only after a few startled moments does Mercy recognize that it is the tortured body of Stefan. It is difficult to kill a vampire, but not impossible. In order to survive Stefan needs blood immediately. He reaches for Mercy but Adam quickly steps in. Although werewolves and vampires don't normally care for one another Stefan has helped Adam's pack in the past. Adam offers his blood and others in the pack do the same. Marsilia has sent a brutal message but there is more. On the door of Mercy shop crossed bones have been painted another warning sign from the vampire mistress that she knows of Mercy's part in Andre's death and Stephan's role in the cover up.

Later that day a college acquaintance shows up at Mercy's door begging for help to rid her house of a ghost. A perplexing request but one that gives Mercy a reason to leave the area. The tension between the vampire and werewolf community has become extremely tense. Mercy feels that she is to blame and that Marsilia's wrath will bring harm to all those she cares about. Of course this solves nothing and the series of troubles only becomes more complex.

Bone Crossed captivated me from the beginning. It's become a cliche to say I couldn't put this book down so I'll simply say I didn't want to stop reading, and when I absolutely had to couldn't wait to get back to it. And it's not only for the story but also for the interesting variety of characters and the believable way in which they interact. I like the fact that Mercy loves working on car engines and getting her hands dirty. As far as clothing there is nothing of the fashionista about her. She's loyal, likable and tough.

Salvation of the Damned - Vampire Book Review

Salvation of the Damned by Theresa Meyers. Silhouette Nocturne Bites, March 1, 2009. (novella, ebook - available from eHarlequin.com March 1)

Raphael has come to find the woman whose intoxicating scent fills every fiber of his being. It's the time of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. He walks into a room filled with partiers , but he immediately knows where she is. Evaline senses someone's intense gaze on her and she cannot believe that it comes from a most handsome man who only has eyes for her. Many romances begin this way. It's what the reader expects, wants. In this story the vampire Raphael seeks out Eva because on this night his kind needs the sacrifice of this special woman in order to continue their existence. The sacrifice must be made every thousand years and Raphael's has always been the hunter. He has always done his duty, but this time is heartbreakingly different. The spirit of his beloved Isabeau has been reborn as Eva. How can he lead her to her death? Meyers' story easily captures the heart of the reader (most probably a chick) looking for romance with a hint of spice. I read Salvation in one satisfying gulp.

Watch for an Interview with Theresa Meyers during the first week of March!

Out of Time - Review

Out of Time by Lynn Abbey. Ace, 2000.

Here's an oldie but goody. Lynn Abbey has been writing fantasy for many years and doing a darn good job of it. I read this book a few years ago and really loved it. Perhaps some of the appeal was due to the protagonist being a librarian - I was a reference librarian for many years and still remain one in my heart. Usually we are portrayed little old ladies wearing their hair in a bun with no sense of adventure. Well, it's just not true. Please read on...

Emma, a 50 year-old university librarian, has led a fairly normal existence until the day she stumbles upon a strange box in her basement. Her real name, Merle Acalia, is written across the yellowed cardboard. Inside she finds a book of charms and spells and old letters, all left to her by Eleanor, the mother who abandoned her when she was very young. To her distress Emma becomes involved in a world of dimensions she had never imagined, a frightening world where curses take on form and must be hunted through time and destroyed lest they cause terrible suffering for those who live in the here-and-now. With reluctance Emma takes up the mantel of hunter-witch. Out of Time has a brilliant plot and intricate, believable characters. There is a proper ending, but with one part of the plot left unresolved, leaving it obvious that there will be at least one sequel.

If you go to the chapter sites you will also have a chance to read Lynn Abby's background notes. It's always interesting to me what writers have to go through on the way to publication.
